It is with deep regret that the Schooley's Mountain Fire Protection Association announces the final alarm for Past Chief Pat McDonnell. Pat served as Company Chief in 1989 through 1991 and Department Chief in 1992.

Patrick Eneas “Pat” McDonnell Sr., 68, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, surrounded by his family, after a brief but very courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 22, 1948 to Eneas Francis McDonnell and Marilynn Dittmann. Mr. McDonnell had a successful career as a financial officer with Illinois Bell, AT&T and Lucent Technologies. Upon his retirement, he worked at The Home Depot in New Jersey and then at Walmart in Virginia.

He spent his life using his keen analytical mind and his loving and generous heart, giving to his family and his community.

While he lived in New Jersey, he was a longtime volunteer firefighter and former chief of the Schooley’s Mountain Fire Protection Association, as well as Township Chief. He served as Mayor of Washington Township and on the Township Committee.

In Virginia, he was finance chair of the Smith Mountain Lake (SML) Good Neighbors Association; served on the Finance Council of Resurrection Catholic Church; and was a member of the Rotary Club of SML. He continued giving to the community, even in his illness. He participated in an experimental trial through his treatments, so that his efforts will someday help to find a cure for cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda McDonnell; his children, Tracey McDonnell Wysor and her husband, Brian, of Rhode Island and Rick McDonnell and his wife, Diane, of New Jersey; four adored grandchildren, Sylvia, Evan, Ashley and Eli; three brothers, Michael McDonnell and his wife, Pat, Ken McDonnell and his wife, Sheila, and Sean McDonnell and his wife, Jennifer; a sister, Laura Chakeen and her husband, Toby; brother-in-law Glenn Kryst and his wife, Liz; his mother-in-law, Ritaclaire Kryst; and numerous loved nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection was held on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Road, Moneta, Va. Arrangements were by the Burch-Messier Funeral Home, Bedford, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Smith Mountain Lake Good Neighbors Association, P.O. Box 2, Moneta, Va., 24121 (; and the Carilion Clinic Foundation, P.O. Box 12187, Roanoke, Va., 24023 (
