US Postal Service unveils new Tribute to Heroes Stamp  (June 23, 2002)

Washington Township firefighters attended the unveiling of the new semipostal Tribute to Heroes stamp at the Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater.

Firefighters, police officers and EMT's from all over New Jersey attended the event accompanied by the New Jersey United Pipe Band. They were led to the field by the NJ Law Enforcement Honor Guard and included members from the Port Authority Police, NYPD and FDNY. Following the procession and invocation, a flyover by the State Police medivac helicopter, Northstar took place along with words of welcome and appreciation by several government and USPS officials. Governor James E. McGreevey joined the hundreds of emergency workers and participated in the unveiling of the new stamp. A gun salute and taps concluded the ceremony. Cheering fans turned out to show their support. A portion of the sales of this postage stamp are being used to raise funds to provide assistance to families of emergency relief personnel killed or permanently disabled in connection with the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The price of the Heroes of 2001 semipostal stamp will be 45 cents. The 11-cent difference between the sales price of the stamp and the underlying postage in effect at the time of purchase consists of a contribution. Funds raised in connection with sales of the stamp, net of the Postal Service's reasonable costs, are to be transferred to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
