Fire Department Receives New Breathing Apparatus (April 3, 2005)
The Washington Township Fire Department recently received and placed into service the new air packs to be worn by firefighters in every hazardous situation. The funding for this $355,000 project was 90% provided by a grant the Fire Department applied for in 2003 and received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in March of 2004. At a dedication event attended by Congressman Frelinghuysen and Mayor Short, firefighters demonstrated the new equipment and explained how it better protects them during fires and emergencies.

The packs include lighter carbon fiber cylinders which are rated for 45 minutes as opposed to old units which are rated for 30. These units also comply with new regulations, which require both a Heads Up Display as well as a universal partner coupling. The HUD is a visual arrangement of LED lights which are attached to the face piece so that the firefighter can easily see their air supply without being obtrusive or distracting. The universal RIC coupling is a fitting, which will allow a firefighter from a rescue team to supply a downed firefighter with crucial air regardless of brand of SCBA or Fire Department they are from. They also contain an Integrated Computer Module, which provides an integrated alerting system and redundant air alarm. Both a digital and analog pressure display and an estimated air supply gauge in minutes based upon breathing rate of operator are included. The new harness is made of a thermoplastic back plate, which is more ergonomically correct and lighter than existing metal one. There is more lumbar and shoulder padding for operator comfort. The pull straps are wider and stronger making for an easier to don SCBA. The system also provides for downloadable usage reports which can help with maintenance record keeping as well as investigations into injuries of firefighters as well as critiquing use.

Many thanks for all who assisted in the funding, procurement and set-up of these vital pieces of equipment.
