Firefighters use props to teach children fire safety (June 12, 2008)

Several Schooley's Mountain firefighters attended the annual end-of-year family fun day at Cucinella School to teach fire safety. Besides the fire engine and teaching materials, they had the benefit of a fire safety trailer which allowed them to demonstrate to the elementary school children (and their parents) how to escape a fire in their home.

The trailer uses simulated heat and smoke to show different types of situations in the bedroom or kitchen, with working smoke alarms and escape ladders. Below, Captain Pierce helps a child "escape" through a window.

Our sincere thanks to the Flanders Fire Company and Chief Fred Detoro for the use of their Fire Safety trailer.
