The Schooley’s Mountain Fire Company,
your local VOLUNTEER Fire Company, is asking for your financial support.
Your support is CRITICAL to the continued operation of our fire station,
since Washington Township does NOT provide full funding for the Fire
Department.
Your contribution is an investment in the VOLUNTEER firefighters who
provide emergency response to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is
NO LABOR COST for the fire protection you receive in Washington Township.
While the Township provides tax dollars toward the purchase of apparatus
and some equipment, the cost of additional equipment, along with building
maintenance and operations falls solely on the Fire Company. Costs
continue to escalate while funding support has remained flat, and
available volunteer time for fund raising continues to diminish as
training and duty requirements increase.
Schooley's Mountain firefighters spend over 5,400 person-hours annually to
protect you. New firefighters begin with 150 hours of basic firefighting
training at county fire academies. Their training continues with regular
monthly drills and additional, advanced academy training. The volunteer
firefighters are trained in not only structural and automobile
firefighting, but also rope, and water rescue and chemical firefighting.
The Fire Company responds to approximately 300 calls each year and
provides service to the Schooley’s Mountain, Port Murray, Hackettstown and
Long Valley sections of Washington Township. These calls include
residential structure fires, brush fires, fire alarms, odors of smoke,
automobile fires and accidents, carbon monoxide alarms, and many other
types of calls for service.
Over the course of a year, your VOLUNTEER firefighters provide an
invaluable service to the community. Not only do they perform their
firefighting duties, but also participate in community events as well,
such as school education programs, National Night Out, and fire awareness
programs. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the households in our
area contribute to the Annual Fund Drive. If it were necessary to form a
paid fire department, and incorporate salaries and building costs into the
Township’s tax base, it would require an annual expenditure of over 3
million dollars!!
We hope the savings and protection afforded you by the VOLUNTEER Fire
Company will help you to strongly consider making a generous donation,
which is tax deductible. For more information, stop by and see us at the
fire station on Monday evenings. We thank you for your support.
