SMFPA members visit FDNY Marine 1

Several of the SMFPA members recently took a ride on the John D. McKean, the City of New York's fireboat based in lower Manhattan.

Built by John Mathis, Camden N.J. in 1954. at a cost of $1,426,000. Has a capacity of 19,000 GPM at 150 PSI. Twin screw. Put in service as Engine 57. The "McKean" is 1 of 2 "big boats" left protecting the entire coast line of N.Y.C. as well as parts of New Jersey and Long Island. She is stationed on the North River as Marine Company 1. Length is 129', Beam 30', Draft 9'.

The day also included stops at Rescue 1 and the Manhattan Communications Center.
